"CHOOSING THE RIGHT PUPPY BREED FOR YOU"

Puppies come in all shapes and sizes, most with their own unique personalities and needs. So the second most important question to ask yourself—aside from should you welcome a puppy into your life—is which breed will be the right fit for you and your lifestyle.

Where you live matters

Some puppies love nothing more than spending every minute snuggled up next to their people. So if you call a tiny apartment “home”, they’ll be happy knowing you’re never more than a few feet away. Other more active breeds will need space to stretch their legs. So a house—preferably one with a yard—might be a better fit.

Your activity level

Besides being your buddy, how will your puppy fit into your life? If you’re looking for an exercise partner to take with you on long jogs, a lazier breed, like a bulldog, probably won’t be up for all that. The opposite goes for a more active, high-energy pup—don’t be surprised if your border collie starts using his shepherding instincts to herd you away from the couch.

Attention

If you don’t feel comfortable being the center of attention, a more independent breed of dog might be best for you. A dog’s personality and energy level all impact the amount of time and attention he needs.

Training

A dog’s learning rate will impact the amount of time it will take to train him.

Grooming

Think about grooming needs. Some breeds need more grooming than others. Their shedding habits might also be a big consideration, especially if you prefer keeping a tidier home.

All puppies need love. Some have additional specific needs. Use our Puppy Finder to find out which breeds are potential matches for you.
